Try to picture yourself living in the world of the first century church. Try to imagine how you would feel, how you would live, how you would survive. What was it like living back then? It was very different than today.

Most travel was on foot or on an animal. Most people did not read or write so almost all communication was either spoken or via a messenger. There was little to no effective medical treatment, so serious disease was widespread and many injuries resulted in permanent disability or death. It was a primitive time by today's standards for sure.

It was a high-risk time to live. Safety and security were minimal or non-existent for most people. So if someone wanted to harm or take what another person had, that person's options were to submit, flee or fight. For most people it was a scenario of survival by keeping a low profile in an environment of hardship, oppression and violence. It was a barbaric time by today's standards.
