Live strong with the discipline of celebration
A man once walked into Charles Spurgeon’s church and found him laughing heartily with a group of friends. The great preacher, known for his theological depth, also carried a deep, infectious joy. When asked about it, he replied, “If any man had seen me without joy, I should think it was his duty to rebuke me.” Spurgeon understood something many Christians overlook - celebration is not optional. It is fuel for the soul.
Joy is more than an emotion. It is the strength God provides for weary hearts. Nehemiah 8:10 teaches us, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared... Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” True joy is not dependent on what’s happening in the world or how it is portrayed in the media, but on the reality of God’s presence. C.S. Lewis once wrote, “Joy is the serious business of heaven.” If heaven is a place of joyous celebration, shouldn’t the people of God practice it now?
Celebration manifests in many ways - singing, dancing, laughter and lively fellowship. The Psalms overflow with shouts of joy and calls to worship through music. Laughter, too, is a gift from God. Proverbs 17:22 reminds us, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” A faith devoid of joy becomes rigid, while a heart anchored in Christ’s delight is light and free.
In Celebration of Discipline, Richard Foster warns that without celebration, our faith life can become a duty rather than a delight. True celebration is an act of defiance against the world, a rebellion against the culture of worry and fear. Choosing celebration is choosing to live in the fullness of Christ’s victory.
Without celebration, even the most disciplined Christian life can become burdened by things like apathy or legalism. We are not called to mere duty, but to a life that rejoices in our salvation. When we choose joy, we declare that darkness has no hold on our spirit.
Today, make space for celebration. Sing, laugh, and rejoice in God’s goodness. For in doing so, our lives become a testimony to the truth of God’s grace - the reality that He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world.
