God gave us all of our emotions.

God loves a kind of honesty that many of us are not used to. The world that often tells us to hide or minimize our emotions, to keep them tucked away and show only what feels strong or certain. But God sees all of our emotions the moment we feel them in our heart. He welcomes them. He calls us to speak them to Him aloud, to come fully into His presence. I think that’s one reason He gave us the Psalms, to encourage us to do that. Psalm 118 is a good example.

This psalm begins with a declaration we’ve heard before: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever” (Psalm 118:1). We read it and feel its simplicity, but behind those words is something deeply reassuring. “His love endures foreve…
