Discovering and Living God's Will for Our Lives
Have you ever had one of those moments where you felt called to act, but doubt whispered, "You’re not ready. You’re fine as you are."? Yet, in your heart, you sensed that God was calling you to step forward. These moments are invitations to experience His guidance in extraordinary ways.
God’s will often stretches us beyond our comfort zones so we can witness His power at work in our lives. The Apostle Paul reminds us, "God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong" (1 Corinthians 1:27). Our weaknesses don’t disqualify us—they position us to rely on Him. As Jonathan Edwards once said, "You contribute nothing to your salvation except the sin that made it necessary." When we acknowledge our need, we make room for God’s strength to shine through.
Walking in God’s will means trusting Him enough to step out in faith, even when the path is unclear. Think of Gideon, who saw himself as the weakest in his family and doubted his calling. Yet, God called him to deliver Israel from their enemies. Gideon’s story (Judges 6:12-16) reminds us that God equips those He calls, even when they feel unprepared.
Consider the example of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:8-16). When all she had was a handful of flour and a little oil, God provided for her, Elijah, and her family throughout the famine. This story shows us that God’s provision often comes in unexpected ways and moments of surrender. John Calvin wisely noted, "We must seek our sustenance from God every moment, as we are utterly dependent on Him." Trusting God’s provision means recognizing that He will sustain us, even in the most uncertain times.
God’s plans often defy human expectations. The story of Naaman (2 Kings 5), a commander in need of healing from leprosy, illustrates this. Instead of a grand quest worthy of his stature, God instructed him to wash in the Jordan River; a humbling act that revealed God’s purpose and power in our submission. This story reminds us that God’s ways are not our ways, and certainly not the ways of the world. As Isaiah 55:9 declares: "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."
When we step out in faith and obedience, our lives become testimonies to His glory. As Augustine of Hippo wrote, "Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe." Our small steps of faith magnify His greatness, reminding the world that His strength is made perfect in weakness.
Take a moment to reflect: In what area is God nudging you to trust Him? Is there a step of faith He is calling you to take? God’s will is discovered in daily surrender, in trusting that His plans are for our good and His glory. Today, invite Him to show you His perfect will. Revelation of both God and self awaits.
