Beloved, We Are God’s Children Now
Jacob never imagined he would hear his son Joseph’s voice again. For years, he had believed the boy was lost forever. But then came the astonishing news - Joseph was alive, and not only alive, but ruling in Egypt. The son Jacob had mourned was now in a place of honor. At first, the news seemed too incredible to grasp. “Jacob was stunned; he did not believe them” (Genesis 45:26, NIV).
Isn’t that how we often respond to the promises of God? Scripture declares, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are” (1 John 3:1, ESV). It’s a truth more marvelous than we can comprehend. Yet in the face of our everyday struggles, we sometimes hesitate to embrace it fully. Some days, we lose sight of it and forget. But God doesn’t.
God’s love is not based on how we feel - it is based on who He is. Martin Luther reminds us, "Faith is a living, daring confidence in God's grace, so sure and certain that a man would stake his life on it a thousand times." We can’t get there by force of will or affirmation. It takes faith to believe that in every season of life, you are God’s child. That kind of faith only comes from hearing the word of Christ.
In his classic book Pleasing God, R.C. Sproul comments, “The moment we are adopted into God’s family, we receive all the rights and privileges of sonship. This is not a temporary arrangement; it is eternal. He will never un-adopt those He has chosen.” Not only on our best days. You are His right now, Christian.
Jacob’s sorrow turned to joy when he saw the proof of his son’s survival. “I’m convinced! My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die” (Genesis 45:28, NIV). For us, the evidence is even greater. The resurrection of Jesus, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the unshakable promises of God all affirm our place in His family. Matthew Henry marvels at this level of God’s grace in his Commentary on the Whole Bible: “Strange, that the holy God is not ashamed to be called our Father, and to call us his sons!”
Maybe today you need that reminder. Maybe life has been overwhelming, or doubts have crept in. But here’s the unchanging truth: “Do not rest your hope on the sand of feelings, but on the rock of divine revelation. The fact that you are God’s child stands true, no matter how the winds may blow.” (Charles Spurgeon, Morning and Evening). And if that is true, we can live with confidence and joy.
Whatever lies ahead, we have a future filled with promises. “Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:2, ESV).
Let this truth settle in your heart today: You are loved, chosen, and secure in Christ. No matter what, you belong to Him.
