In America today Thanksgiving would seem to be all about parades, food, football, and (according to police records and alcohol sales) lots of drinking. While many of us still pause to say a prayer of thanksgiving at our holiday meals, I doubt that we often reflect on how this holiday came to be. You may be surprised to learn how deep the Christian roots of Thanksgiving in America actually are.
Many of us have been taught that the first Thanksgiving was a feast that Puritan Pilgrim settlers and Native Americans shared after signing a peace treaty. Technically, that’s not true since what we call America did not exist at that time. The words of those great men whose faces are carved in stone on Mt.
