The first few articles in the "Acts" collection will explore the "fruits" or evidence of our relationship with God, the Holy Spirit and how we can best integrate them into our lives in today's world. Let's begin by taking another look at the examples that the apostle Paul cited in his letters to the early churches: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
It's no coincidence that love was first on that list. Paul goes on to say that as Christians, the three most fundamental traits that characterize our beliefs are faith, hope and love - and the greatest of these is love.
Contrary to that song made popular by Tina Turner in the 80's, love is not a secondhand emotion. Far from it. Love is the most important emotion that embodies and evidences our relationship with God. Perhaps the more important questions for Christians to ask is what exactly is love and how can I best practice it in my life? That is what we will explore today.
